KR Systems Honors St. Mary’s County Students at County Science Fair

Lexington Park, March 3, 2004.  Two area high school students received cash awards from KR Systems, Inc. at the St. Mary’s County Science and Engineering Fair held at Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland on February 7, 2004.  Mr. Daniel Page, a junior at Leonardtown High School won the KR Systems Award for Innovation in Computer Science.  Mr. Stephen Min Won, a senior at Great Mills High School won the KR Systems Award for Innovation in Engineering.

Mr. Page’s project involving the encryption of digital images was a continuation of his project last year with significant advances.  In last year’s Science Fair, Mr. Page explored theoretical models of potential ways to encrypt a digital image by scrambling the pixel matrices.  Since then, he has taken a course in Microsoft Visual Basic and wrote code to prove his theory.  This year he brought a laptop to the fair with a working example of how his code will encrypt and decrypt a digital image with a unique randomly generated encryption key.

Mr. Page won first place in the Computer Science Category and the Fair Grand Award in addition to the KR Systems Award for Innovation in Computer Science.  His next stop is the 56th Annual Prince George's Area Science Fair held at Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland on March 26-28, 2004.

Mr. Dronenburg congratulates Mr. Page on his award.

Mr. Won's project involved altering the nose cone of a model rocket.  His theory was that the apogee of a rocket could be increased through utilization of the Magnus effect (dimpling) that is used on golf balls.  Through experimentation and trial, he increased the apogee of his rocket approximately 50% (from 85 meters to 120 meters) using identical rocket motors.  This unusual finding challenges traditional rocketry aerodynamics.

Mr. Won won first place in the Engineering Category in addition to the KR Systems Award for Innovation in Engineering.  He will also compete at the 56th Annual Prince George's Area Science Fair with Mr. Page.

Mr. Dronenburg congratulates Mr. Wong on his award.

This was the first year that KR Systems, Inc. was able to sponsor awards at the St. Mary’s County Science and Engineering Fair.  KR Systems has also invited the two award winners to a company dinner function on March 17 to further recognize their achievements.

Mrs. Gail Kelley, KR Systems Chief Executive Officer, was thrilled to have the opportunity to sponsor the awards.  “KR is proud to be able to partner with our community schools to help foster enthusiasm in academic research in the sciences with the youth of today” said Mrs. Kelley.  “Although this is our first year sponsoring the science fair, we look forward to being able to participate this way for many years in the future.”  Jeffrey Dronenburg Sr., the Director of the Digital Archive Division, presented the awards on behalf of KR Systems.
